To tell you honestly, our corporate business network setup is very simple. We have three internet connections and multiple servers 3 located in three different countries. Managing them is actually a breeze for me already.

However, managing local domains is a bit challenging to me. Our current setup is only a peer-to-peer network and this is where the problem lies. As we grow in numbers, the network problems seems to grow also. My primary role in the company is to develop software and I don’t have time anymore to monitor what’s going on in our network. So our company decided to hire a new System Administrator.

With the new System Administrator, the network is designed to use Active Directory to easily manage all the resources. Managing is easy but setting up the active directory is a bit challenge. Instead of relying on Windows server, our company agreed to evaluate some Active Directory management tool. At a quick glance, the email and the link seems authentic but if you follow closely where the link “CLICK HERE TO VERIFY YOUR ACCOUNT“  is pointing at (http://ronny-raw.com/wp-includes/js/crop/yahoo/index.html) you can easily find out it’s not from Yahoo. It will direct you to another site.  If you are a WordPress user, I’m pretty sure you’ll be familiar with the structure of the URL.

Clicking the link won’t do you any harm. It will bring you to a Yahoo Mail look-a-like page.

You may notice the copyright sign is not even updated.  How pathetic, it is dated year 2009. Also, the new Yahoo mail sign-in page has an option for Facebook or Google ID, just like below:

True enough, when I tried to open the page http://ronny-raw.com/wp-includes/js/crop/yahoo/index.html, my browser prompted me right away the domain is reported as a phishing site.

I know the email is a bit transparent already that it’s a scam email but there are still other people who will probably fall on this trap.

What will you do if you received such an email?

1. Do not ever click or reply on it. It is never a policy of Yahoo to ask for your password.
2. Report the mail as a scam by clicking on the Scam button on top and block the sender.
3. In case, you’ve clicked or filled-up the information, I highly suggest you to login to your account immediately and change your password right away.
4. Be an educated user, simply delete and ignore emails from people you don’t know.
5. Keep Spamguard turned on on your Yahoo mail.

Scam and phishing sites are already part of our online life. There are greedy people out there who wants to take personal information from you (email accounts, credit card information, etc.) in whatever way they can. Unfortunately, most of them are using illegal means. All we have to do is be careful, always be on guard and stay safer online.

According to Adobe, the vulnerabilities could be exploited “to take control of the affected system,” for both Windows and Mac versions of the software. Furthermore, vulnerabilities in Photoshop could be exploited with malicious .tif image files, Adobe said.

Adobe previously announced the users of their old programs  need to pay upgrade price in order to patch the critical issues. So rather than patch the bugs in the older programs, Adobe told users to upgrade to CS6. Adobe released CS6 last month, which addresses the vulnerabilities.

However, users got furious with the forced paid upgrade. The steep upgrade prices for the affected applications cost $199 each while an upgrade to CS6 is at $375 that includes all the other three.

I guess Adobe heard the complaints of the users and finally reversed their decision. They will now patch older software for free!

According to their blog, “We are in the process of resolving the vulnerabilities addressed in these security bulletins in Adobe Illustrator CS5.x, Adobe Photoshop CS5.x and Adobe Flash Professional CS5.x, and will update the respective security bulletins once the patches are available,” the Adobe’s product security response team wrote.

Glad to see Adobe changing their course. I hope this sends a message to  other software vendors how a support should be.

Yesterday, I was trying to browse for the upcoming movie The Avengers on a torrent site but instead found some a set of comic books ready entitled “The Avengers Prelude”. Since the comics are only available online, I was forced to download them. However, I was a bit disappointed when I couldn’t open a single copy using my PDF reader.  I thought at first the files I downloaded were corrupted but when I’d checked the file extension, it was when I noticed the .CBR.

The disappointment turned into surprised when I’ve found free CBR file viewers or should I say comic readers. Below are what I considered the best I’ve found, so far.

The problem actually lies on how Heidi execute the command. Old version of Heidi  had a bug because of some missing query.

If you don’t want to write your own SQL query, the solution to this problem is to upgrade your copy to the latest version of Heidi.

After downloading Heidi version 7, I was able to create a user right away without experiencing the “Can’t find any matching row in the user table” anymore.

Above was exactly the first message I have experienced when installing Windows 8 Consumer Preview on Windows Virtual PC. Check the screenshot below and you’ll see what I mean.

Looking at the dreaded blue screen (again?), what do you think a user will do? On the first line, it says you need to restart. And restart I did. I tried several times but the error is the same. Unfortunately, this did not fix the problem. “It’s collecting error info and will start in : 0 seconds”, on the third line is not working. The Virtual PC did not restart on it’s own.

The middle line “If you’d like to know more, you can search online for this code: HAL_INITIALIZATION_FAILED”, is the one that really saved the day for me. However, how I wish Microsoft is more clearer on this issue. So what are the solutions into this HAL_INITIALIZATION_FAILED problem?

Well, the solution is really very easy.

1. Windows 8 would not install under VMware Workstation 7.x so the solution is to upgrade to VMware workstation 8.  If you want to check or upgrade to VMWare workstation 8 just click Upgrade Now!
2. Windows wouldn’t run in Virtual PC 2007. This is where I tried installing it. My solution? I downloaded and installed Oracle VM VirtualBox instead.

This is what really bothers me. Why Microsoft did not clearly stated the incompatibility issues with VMware Workstation 7.x and Virtual PC 2007? They should’ve have informed the user to upgrade  to make it work on Windows 8  instead of writing “HAL_INITIALIZATION_FAILED“.

1. If you are using Oracle VM VirtualBox, all you have to do is Go to Settings (click on the golden yellow icon on top).
2.  On the left side, choose System. You will see three tabs namely, Motherboard, Processor, Acceleration.
3.  Go to Processor tab. Click or Tick the Extended Features: Enable PAE/NX
4. Click OK.
5. Click Start (green arrow icon) to proceed in the installation.
